“Often the hands know how to solve a riddle which the intellect has wrestled with, in vain.” -Carl Jung
Play Therapy uses a variety of play and creative arts to addresses moderate to severe emotional conditions and mental health difficulties in children.
Play Therapy can help children make sense of their feelings or upsetting events that they have experienced. Children use play to communicate at their own level and at their own pace without feeling interrogated. Using a suitable room; the child can choose from a wide selection of materials. Which includes art and craft resources, sand, water, clay, musical instruments and books. The child will use these resources to express him or herself without having to provide verbal explanations.
I am a Certified Play and Creative Arts therapist, based in Dorset. I initially trained as a Primary Age teacher and have worked across the primary age range in mainstream and special schools.
Before becoming a full time Play Therapist, I also worked for 9 years as a family support worker, supporting individual families and running parenting programmes; to help support parent-child relationships. Play is a natural medium for children, it is through child led play they have the opportunity to fully express themselves.
If you are based in Dorset and your child is showing signs of emotional or behavioural problems, then you may want more information about how Play Therapy can help.
